Oh yes, make no mistake. We spend a LOT of money on alcohol. We just love to head off to the bar with some of the guys or girls, and spend a few hours chatting and drinking a few beers. A lot of people also love their sports, and will go to the bar for that reason as well, since many bars will stream all the top games as they happen.
Furthermore, over the last few years, wine drinking has increased out of all proportion. Fifty years ago, very few families or couples would drink wine at home, but now it is not only drunk with meals, but is seen as a form of relaxation. Rather than sitting down to watch the TV with a cup of tea, coffee, or even a beer, we now sit down with a glass of Pinot Noir or Shiraz in hand. Wine, of course, costs more than beer, and people are spending more and more on better class wines, thus making drinking alcohol another of the 5 things we spend most of our money on today.
Many people spend an inordinate amount of money on clothes, whether to dress for work or to impress the opposite sex. Designer labels abound: it is seen as something of a status symbol to be wearing a sweater or jacket with the designer’s name all over it, and they charge far more for it. Quite why we will pay more for a pair of jeans that advertises the manufacturer’s label is rather odd: we are advertising their product, and paying them for the privilege, yet we can buy an almost identical pair of jeans at Walmart for far less.
But certainly, clothes are another item that we spend a lot of money on, and can take a fair amount of the monthly income.
